Understanding Stripe's Payment Processing Fees
How the percentage-plus-fixed-fee model actually works.
Published Jul 1, 2026 · Updated Jul 8, 2026
Stripe's Standard rate combines a percentage of the transaction with a small fixed fee per successful charge. Both pieces matter, especially for businesses with many small transactions.
Worked example
On a $10 charge at 2.9% + $0.30, the fee is $0.29 (2.9% of $10) plus $0.30, for a total of $0.59 — meaning the fee is nearly 6% of that particular transaction.
- Percentage scales with transaction size
- Fixed fee is the same regardless of amount
- High-volume merchants can often negotiate a custom rate
